Simonds Read-A-Thon

‘Splash’ into a Good Book!

This year, in honor of National School Library Month, the Simonds School PTO is once again hosting a Read-A-Thon! The best part is that 100% of the money collected will be used at our school for our students.

This year, the students have been challenged to read 25,000 minutes and raise $2,025. If they reach their goal, our school will earn a special assembly from the Seacoast Science Center.

All students who read and turn in their reading log will receive a participation award. The top reader in each grade will get a special recognition. The top reader of the whole school will receive the Read-A-Thon Top Reader trophy!

Please support our students in their reading efforts during this fun, educational event. EVERYONE who participates and turns in their reading log will get a prize!

Reading Goals

A Read-A-Thon is a fun way to raise funds for our school while supporting the educational goals of every student.  This year the students have been challenged to read a total of 25,000 minutes to meet a school-wide goal!

The focus at school will be the One School One Book challenge, Odder by Katherine Applegate.

At home, make this challenge fun for the whole family! Take a trip to the library and stock up on books that interest your child. Encourage and praise your child as they participate and engage in reading anything that is appropriate for their reading level.

For children in the lower grades, listening to adults or older siblings read counts as reading time. When reading with your child, ask recall questions about characters or details of the story in order to build his or her reading comprehension skills. Talk about the story and relate it to your child’s everyday life when possible.

To parents, family members, and guardians, we encourage you to take the challenge of setting a goal and reading daily as well. Show your child that reading is important in your life, too.

When our children see us reading, they learn the value and joy of it.

Read-a-thon Rules

PARTICIPATION:
In celebration of National School Library Month, all students at Simonds are asked to participate in the Read-A-Thon fundraiser! This is a fun and educational way to raise money for our school without selling overpriced merchandise. And the best part is that 100% of the donations go to our school. Rewards are given to students based on reading participation.

GATHER SPONSORS:
Students are encouraged to get as many donations from sponsors as they can starting on Friday, April 4th. You can raise money for Simonds by having your sponsors pledge a flat amount for your reading efforts. Your friends and family can also donate online at www.simondspto.org For safety reasons, collect pledges only from people you know. Do not ask strangers!

READING WEEK TIPS:
The Read-A-Thon reading days run a total of ten (10) days from Friday, April 4th, through Sunday, April 13th, during National School Library Week. The students will have some dedicated time during the school day to read as well.

  • Kindergarten: 10-20 minutes
  • First: 15-25 minutes
  • Second: 20-30 minutes
  • Third: 25-35 minutes
  • Fourth: 30-45 minutes
  • Fifth: 30-60 minutes

Please work with your child to set a reading goal that is a bit challenging, yet attainable given his or her reading level and ability. If you have questions about what is appropriate, please contact your child’s teacher.

Be sure to record all your reading time throughout the week and get an adult to initial each time. Copy and use additional forms if necessary.

  • Students too young to read alone can have a family member or friend read to them and it counts as minutes.
  • Students reading to other students counts as time for you both!
  • Assigned reading for homework also counts toward reading minutes as well.
